The Story
The Queen of Istrian White Grapes and a Commitment to Quality
Malvazija Istarska is undoubtedly the queen of Istrian white grapes. It's an indigenous varietal to the region, highly prized for producing wines that balance crisp acidity, complex floral and stone fruit aromas, and a distinctively savory minerality.
All grapes are meticulously hand-harvested to ensure only the highest quality fruit is used. To preserve the grape's inherent freshness and vibrant aromatics, all fermentation and aging take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, avoiding strong oak influence. Young winemaker Marko Fakin has rapidly grown his winery into one of Croatia's most awarded estates, continually proving year after year that Motovun is a world-class terroir for Malvazija.
Food Pairing
The crisp acidity and saline minerality of this Malvazija complement an astonishing range of dishes, from traditional Mediterranean fare to delicate Asian cuisine:
- ■ White fish carpaccio and sushi: The wine's bright citrus notes and sharp minerality act like a fresh squeeze of lemon, enhancing the clean flavors of raw seafood.
- ■ Vegetable tempura: The crisp and refreshing acidity perfectly cuts through the oiliness of a light batter, with the wine's subtle almond finish harmonizing beautifully with the savory crunch.
- ■ Pasta with truffles (fuži): A classic regional pairing. The wine's strong structure stands up to and complements the rich, earthy flavors of truffles, a specialty of the Motovun forests where the grapes grow.
Serving Temperature: 10℃〜12℃ (Enjoy its full richness within this temperature range)
Vineyard & Terroir
Motovun, Istrian Terroir
The vineyards are located on the slopes surrounding Motovun, a region famous for its truffle-rich forests and distinctive marl soil, locally known as "Terre Bianche" (white earth). This combination of mineral-rich soil, warm Mediterranean sun, and cool winds blowing from the Mirna River valley gives the wine its strong structure and sharp, refreshing character.
"When selecting wines for direct import from Croatia, this is exactly the standard I look for. It has a beautiful and inviting freshness that instantly transports you to the Istrian coast, and its crisp minerality enhances the pleasure of pairing it with delicate Japanese cuisine.
