Lipovac Winery "Gea" 2022
A breathtaking amber masterpiece born from ancient qvevri and the wild terroir of Montenegro. Nestled in Granjani in the dramatic Skadar Lake valley, Lipovac Winery breathes new life into ancient winemaking traditions by crafting profound, low-intervention wines.
Tasting Notes
■ Appearance: Deep and brilliant amber.
■ Aroma: A complex and unforgettable bouquet reminiscent of spring white flowers and raw honey. With an enchanting and earthy undertone of incense and dried stone fruit.
■ Palate: Dense, rich, and firm in texture. The tight mouthfeel and fine, light tannins resulting from prolonged skin contact are beautifully balanced by a richly appetizing natural acidity, leading to a long, rounded, and complex finish.
This wine is a pure and unfiltered expression of Montenegro’s unique landscape. Allow it to breathe slightly in the glass to fully appreciate the historical 60-day skin contact and its captivating amber complexity.
Story
A Fusion of Tradition and Indigenous Vitality
This wine is crafted from a unique blend of two white grape varieties native to the region. Morava, a high-quality Balkan hybrid, maintains lively acidity and offers herbaceous notes akin to Sauvignon Blanc. It harmonizes beautifully with Žižak (Zhizhak), an indigenous Montenegrin variety historically cultivated around Podgorica.
The winemaking of "Gea" is entirely based on historical methods with minimal intervention. After careful hand-picking, the grapes undergo a 60-day skin contact and fermentation in traditional Georgian qvevri buried underground. After maceration, the wine is further aged for 4-6 months in Italian terracotta amphorae. This allows the wine to naturally clarify and mature with micro-oxygenation, undisturbed by oak barrel aromas.
Food Pairing
Perfect pairings for this wine:
- ■ Rich Pan-Asian Cuisine: The wine's aromatic honey and incense notes enhance fragrant spices, while its rich natural acidity beautifully mellows the richness of the dishes.
- ■ Aged Salty Cheeses: The tight mouthfeel and delicate tannins balance the saltiness and fat of aged cheeses, bringing out a perfectly harmonious umami.
- ■ Umami-rich Sauces: The wine's earthy and structural vitality complements deep, flavorful umami notes found in soy sauce or mushroom glazes, without being overpowered.
Serving Temperature: 6°C — 8°C (Enjoy its full richness within this temperature range)
Vineyard & Terroir
Granjani, Skadar Lake Valley
At an altitude of 400 meters, the grapevines root deeply into clay and sandy soil rich in surface rock. Benefiting greatly from dramatic diurnal temperature shifts and sea breezes blowing in from the Adriatic, this terroir produces highly expressive, mineral-rich wines with a distinct Balkan character.
“This wine truly stops me in my tracks. The 60 days of skin contact in qvevri imparts an enchanting texture – it's wild, historic, and undeniably authentic. An absolute must-try for anyone who appreciates the true art of untamed winemaking.”
