A medieval legend is revived. The rare "smoked" Ribolla, born from the heart of Brda.
Tasting Notes
■ Appearance: A deep, brilliant golden amber, gleaming with a warm copper hue.
■ Aroma: An enchanting bouquet of lemon peel, cedar, and quince. Layers of bread crust, acacia, and subtle, elegant herbal smoke.
■ Palate: Powerful and well-structured. The distinctive influence of barrels smoked with Mediterranean herbs like sage and rosemary is beautifully integrated with intense minerality and a long, rich finish.
The most striking feature of this wine is the revival of an ancient technique using barrels smoked with dried sage and bay leaves. Far from a mere gimmick, this method maximizes the potential of Ribolla, lending it an intelligent and rich depth.
The Story
Klet Brda's Challenge to Revive Medieval Tradition
"Motnik" is the most prestigious historical project undertaken by Klet Brda, a producers' cooperative often called the soul of Slovenian wine. Under the direction of renowned winemaker Darinko Ribolica, they revived the ancient tradition of "barrel smoking" that their ancestors used to purify and flavor barrels. Each drop, born after 10 months of skin maceration, encapsulates the history of Brda.
Food Pairing
This amber wine, with its smoky aroma, herbal notes, and rich tannins, perfectly complements dishes typically served with lighter red wines.
- ■ Smoked duck or roasted pork belly (the savory richness of fat harmonizes with herbal aromas)
- ■ Seafood and vegetable risotto (minerality enhances the sweetness of shellfish)
- ■ Aged hard cheeses / Comté or Pecorino (softens tannins and highlights honey-like nuances)
Serving Temperature: 12℃〜14℃ (Enjoy its true richness at this temperature range)
Vineyard & Terroir
Risičuk Vineyard (Neblo village) with "Opoka" Soil
Located at an altitude of 150m, this south-facing terraced vineyard features traditional "Opoka" marl soil. The microclimate, combining winds from the Alps and Mediterranean sun, results in an extremely low yield of 1kg per cluster, creating incredible concentration.
"It is rare to encounter a 2014 vintage so vibrant and full of life. The smoked barrel technique lends an intelligent and rich depth to the Ribolla variety." — Owner of Wine Shop Piti
