A wild, untamed orange wine expressing the ancient soul of Cyprus's mountains, born from 45 days of skin contact. This ultra-rare micro-production, with only 451 bottles crafted by Yiannis Kyriakides of Vouni Panayia, redefines natural winemaking. Nestled high in the rugged Panayia mountains of Cyprus, the winery is fully committed to organic viticulture and indigenous bush vines, capturing the island's raw and pure essence.
Tasting Notes
■ Appearance: Deep, turbid amber-orange, indicative of completely unfined and unfiltered production.
■ Aroma: A captivating and wild bouquet where dried apricot, chamomile, wild herbs, and distinct sweet baking spice notes from the Morokanella grape intermingle.
■ Palate: Bold and full-bodied, extremely dry. The powerful tannins and concentrated texture from extended skin contact are perfectly balanced by the sharp acidity characteristic of high altitudes and a deep, stony mineral finish.
This wine is made with strict minimal intervention, completely unfined and unfiltered. Natural sediment or cloudiness may be present, which is a natural phenomenon and does not affect the quality at all.
The Story
Cyprus's Indigenous Morokanella and Ultimate Natural Winemaking
Locally known as "Baby Cinnamon," Morokanella is a fascinating indigenous Cypriot grape variety. Historically, it hasn't received much attention, but it thrives exceptionally well at extreme high altitudes. Through prolonged skin maceration, it transforms into an incredibly aromatic and structured orange wine with excellent aging potential.
Harvest is done entirely by hand in the first week of October. After natural fermentation with wild yeasts in stainless steel tanks, the wine undergoes an extremely long skin contact period of 45 days. True to the philosophy of natural winemaking, it is bottled completely unfined and unfiltered to preserve its powerful individuality.
Food Pairing
Recommended perfect matches for this wine:
- ■ Spice-rubbed roasted pork belly: The powerful tannins perfectly cut through rich fat, and the wine's subtle "baby cinnamon" notes resonate with the spiced seasoning.
- ■ Aged hard cheeses (e.g., aged Pecorino): The wine's deep, umami-rich texture enhances the saltiness and rich savoriness of aged cheese.
- ■ Middle Eastern mezze (e.g., baba ghanoush or falafel): The earthy, natural flavors and wild herb nuances of the wine harmonize beautifully with roasted eggplant, garlic, and tahini.
Optimal Drinking Temperature: 12°C to 14°C (Enjoy at this temperature range to bring out its full richness)
Vineyard & Terroir
Panayia Mountains, Paphos (Altitude: 800m - 1150m)
Organic, low-density bush vines dating back to the 1940s and 50s. The unique dual-layer soil composition of limestone and schist in the topsoil and deep clay beneath guides the ancient vines' roots deep into the earth in search of nutrients. Furthermore, the harsh mountainous environment at an altitude of 1150m creates drastic diurnal temperature shifts, imparting a vibrant acidity essential for balancing the wine's bold tannic structure.
"Having worked in vineyards since I was 13, I have a deep respect for true minimal intervention winemaking, and this bottle truly overwhelmed me. The 45 days of skin contact lend it a raw, textured energy that celebrates traditional methods. With only 451 bottles produced, it will be an incredibly rare and intense experience for genuine natural wine lovers."
