Slovenia's proud masterpiece of Modra Frankinja (Blaufränkisch). This vibrant, fruit-forward red wine, rich in antioxidants, comes from the untouched hills of Dolenjska.
Tasting Notes
■ Appearance: Deep ruby red with vibrant, youthful purple nuances.
■ Aroma: A beautifully rustic bouquet of ripe dark cherry, plum, forest floor, wild mushrooms, and a hint of black pepper.
■ Palate: Rich yet incredibly refreshing on the palate. The juicy dark red fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, gentle tannins, and a spicy, woody finish are in perfect balance.
Modra Frankinja (also known as Blaufränkisch) is a leading Central European grape variety highly regarded for its vibrant acidity and black fruit profile. It has also been proven to be one of the wine varieties with the highest content of resveratrol, a powerful natural antioxidant, earning it attention as the "wine of the future."
The Story
Vina Zajc: A Historic Family Winery in Harmony with Nature
Vina Zajc is a historic family-owned estate with winemaking roots dating back to 1858. Located in the picturesque rolling hills of Dolenjska, Slovenia, it is known for combining a deep respect for indigenous varieties with sustainable viticulture that prioritizes the natural environment.
Grapes are carefully hand-picked at optimum ripeness for maximum concentration. After 10 days of maceration in stainless steel tanks using native yeasts, the wine is aged for 6 months in wooden barrels and then rested in stainless steel tanks, achieving a perfect balance of fruit purity and subtle oak notes.
Food Pairing
The vibrant acidity and earthy notes of this wine make it surprisingly versatile for pairing with rich, flavorful rustic dishes:
- ■ Venison or wild boar stew (The wine's earthy and mushroom notes perfectly complement the rich flavors of game)
- ■ Aged hard cheeses (The gentle tannins and vibrant acidity perfectly harmonize with the rich fat of sharp aged cheeses)
- ■ Grilled portobello mushrooms (A wonderful vegetarian pairing that naturally resonates with the wine's forest floor aromas)
Serving Temperature: 16℃〜18℃ (Enjoy the wine's full richness within this temperature range)
Vineyard & Terroir
Terroir of Dolenjska, Posavje Region, Slovenia
The Dolenjska hills, stretching along the Krka and Sava rivers, have a continental climate characterized by hot summers and harsh, snowy winters. The diverse geological soil, a mixture of clay, marl, and carbonate sandstone, gives this wine its distinctive mineral backbone and refreshing finish.
"This is exactly why I strongly recommend wines from the Balkans and Eastern Europe. 'Modri Zajc' brings an incredibly wild and powerful energy to the glass, brimming with wild fruit. It's a true Slovenian treasure, ready to drink now!"
